Duke v. NC State: Recap

NC State opened the game against the 9th-ranked Duke Blue Devils on a 9-0 run. The Duke Blue Devils didn’t score their first basket until a made jumper from Tyrese Proctor a little over three minutes into the game.

After a pair of free throws by Jeremy Roach, Ryan Young, and Mark Mitchell made layups and cut the deficit to one, a 3-pointer by Proctor at the 13:30 mark gave Duke the lead for the first time in the game.

Duke then didn’t score again for almost three minutes. A made jumper from Roach at the 10:45 mark gave Duke the lead, 13-12.

NC State regained the lead at 26-25 following a six-point scoring run spanning just under two minutes. A layup from Roach and a 3-pointer from Proctor gave Duke the lead again, 30-26, with under two minutes to go in the first half.

Duke closed the half on a jumper from Roach and a free throw from Mitchell and went into the break up three, 33-30.

NC State and Duke opened the half by trading buckets, and thanks to two layups from Roach, Duke led 37-36. NC State was able to grab a one-point lead, 44-43, with under six minutes played in the second half.

A put-back from Stewart and a 3-pointer from Jared McCain helped Duke grab the lead again, 50-46, at the under-12 timeout. Duke came out of the break, scored five quick points, and forced NC State to call a timeout with 10:03 left in the second half. 

A lob from Proctor to Stewart and a Roach layup helped Duke extend its lead to 12, 64-52. A four-point play from McCain stretched the lead to 14, 73-59, at the final media break of the game.

Kyle Filipowski scored the final two buckets for Duke, and the game closed out at 79-64 in favor of the Duke Blue Devils.

How Did They Do It:

Duke won the rebounding battle 36 to 31 and won the offensive boards 19 to 13. Duke is now 19-1 when out-rebounding their opponent.

The Blue Devils only had five turnovers, while NC State had 10. Duke was able to score 21 points off of the 10 turnovers, while NC State only scored nine points off of Duke’s five turnovers.

The Duke defense held NC State to a total of 64 points, 12.0 points below its season average of 76.0. The Blue Devils have now held 26 of their 30 opponents below their scoring average.

Duke also limited NC State to only four fastbreak points, winning that battle 10-4. NC State entered the game ranked second in the ACC with an average of 13.5 fastbreak points per game.

Star Players:

Jeremy Roach had 21 points and four rebounds with zero turnovers. He also shot an efficient 9-of-17 and added one steal.

Jared McCain finished with 16 points and five rebounds with zero turnovers. McCain also cashed in on three 3-pointers.

Sean Stewart came off the bench and added 12 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals to his stat line.

Tyrese Proctor added 11 points, four assists and four rebounds to the scorebook. Proctor also made three 3-pointers and added one steal.
