Duke v. Virginia: Recap

The 10th-ranked Duke Blue Devils crushed the Virginia Cavaliers by a score of 73-48 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Led by Kyle Filipowski’s 21 points and seven rebounds, Duke has now won back-to-back games.

Duke also received double-digit scoring from Mark Mitchell and Tyrese Proctor, who scored 15 and 10, respectively.

The Blue Devils dominated this game from the jump ball. Besides Virginia’s opening lead of 2-0, the Cavaliers never held another lead for the rest of the game. A three-point play by Mitchell opened the scoring for Duke, and two straight layups followed from Filipowski with just over two minutes played in the game.

After the first media timeout, Proctor nailed the game's first 3-pointer and gave Duke their first double-digit lead, 14-4, with just over 15 minutes left in the half.

A dunk from freshman Sean Stewart pushed the lead to 12, 21-9, at the under-12 media timeout.

The Blue Devils then went on a 17-4 run that included nine minutes where Virginia did not score a single point. Going into halftime, Duke was ahead 40-18.

Coming out of the break, the Cavaliers scored nine quick points and cut the lead to under 20. Then, a contested layup from Mitchell and a fast-break dunk by Proctor pushed the lead back to 23, 50-27.

The game was never close again, and at the final media timeout, Duke was ahead 68-43. Both teams proceeded to score five more points, and the final score read 73-48 in favor of the Duke Blue Devils.


How Did They Do It

Duke scored 40 first-half points, which is the second-most by any Virginia opponent this season. The Cavaliers scored 18 first-half points, which is their second-fewest total points in a first-half this season.

The Blue Devils held the Cavaliers to 23.1% shooting from the field in the first half. This was the lowest first-half shooting percentage by any Duke opponent this season.

The Duke defense held the Cavaliers to 48 points, 15.7 points below their season average of 63.7. Duke has now held 25 of its 29 opponents below their respective scoring averages.

The Cavaliers entered this game as the national leader in turnovers with the fewest at 8.2 per game. The Blue Devils were able to force the Cavaliers into 12 turnovers.

Duke won the rebounding battle, 42-29. They are now 18-1 when out-rebounding their opponent.

Star Players

Kyle Filipowski scored 15 of his 21 total points in the first half. He shot 9-of-14 from the floor, grabbed seven rebounds and matched his season-high with three steals.

Tyrese Proctor had 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Proctor also shot 3-of-4 from the 3-point line and dished out five assists.

Mark Mitchell had 10 points in this game while also bringing in five rebounds. Duke is now 32-3 when Mitchell scores at least 10 points.

Sean Stewart played some valuable minutes on Saturday. He led the team with eight rebounds and now has his second straight game with at least eight rebounds.
